Occasionally friends and family call me when they have furniture pieces they no longer need. A friend of mine was moving and had an old barn full of what she considered “junk”. She sent me a picture of a wood table and 6 chairs and told me it was headed to the landfill. I said “No! Wait!”. I had been waiting for a farmhouse table refinish project!
Before
I wanted to test out some strippers on this table top. You can see the condition of this table, it needed some serious help. After testing both of these, I’ve decided the Citristrip is my new favorite! Smells great and works like a charm! I striped the entire table and all 6 chairs.
Sanding
I used 180 grit sandpaper to strip the stain down and followed up with 220 grit to smooth it out. We used a smaller palm sander to get into the cracks and crevices.
Staining
I wanted a “Restoration Hardware” type finish on the top. To achieve this I used Rustoleums “Driftwood” stain. Then, I took some Minwax “Dark Walnut” stain and diluted it about half and half with mineral spirits. I applied this mixture directly onto the Driftwood and immediately wiped it away. I didn’t want a dark stain. Only to add some dimension to the gray. I painted the base and chairs with Maison Blanche “Maison White” chalk based paint and distressed. Again, using a plan sander and 220 grit sandpaper. I sealed all pieces with polyacrylic using two coats and allowing a 24 hour dry time between them.
Finished Project
Here’s the project completed. This set is all real wood and made to last. I only had it for a week before it sold! This was a lot of fun and I’m always learning something new with every piece I paint!
