I love giving new life to spaces within my home. However, the entry way to our house was so small. So what I did instead was to make a new entry way space and give it a modern farmhouse feel. I used the wall immediately to the right once you entered our home. Because of the living room layout and furniture placement, this space worked perfectly.
The walls in my living room are real wood paneling with picture frame molding and were a honey oak color. I lightened the space by painting all the walls “Cameo White” by Behr and I used their Marquee brand. I am a huge fan of this line of paint. Great pigment and coverage and low VOC. My husband is a carpenter and was not too happy about my decision to paint them. So, I
convinced him, painted the walls one day after he left for work. Hey, a girls gotta do what a girls gotta do. Am I right? I like to live by the mottos “He’ll learn to love it” and “I prefer to ask forgiveness than permission”.
The wall space would only allow for a narrow piece of furniture. While out junking, I came across a very old wooden primitive bench. The measurements were perfect but I wasn’t a fan of the color. Easy fix. I brought it home and painted it black to have it pop against my new white walls.
For the wall décor I had already purchased some old single pane windows from a local antiques dealer and I had my brother in law cut out a vinyl sign to place on the window. I love the “Milk and Cream” signs I see all over Pinterest so that’s what I went with. Also in black.
Adding a natural element to any space is important to me and I try to incorporate them as often as I can. While at Ross I found two faux boxwood wreathes for under $10 a piece. I do love a good bargain and faux works best for me as I can’t keep plants alive. I am a plant murderer.
I added an old wooden ladder I found at a local antique mall and draped some throws over it to soften up the space a bit. I love that I can change out the throws with the seasons and update the space seasonally for cheap!
The last touch I added were throw pillows. Also cheap and easily changed. Some I make out of old drop clothes and some I buy online. I got the buffalo check pillow covers for a steal off Amazon and those can be found here.
The next step is to finally install the new floors!
Here is how the space turned out.
How do you add modern farmhouse style to your spaces?
Thanks so much for stopping by!
