One of the questions I get asked the most when people ask what it is I do, is how I got started blogging. There is quite a bit of information on the web about this topic so I thought I would break it down for anyone that wants to know how to start a blog. Ready to take the leap and get started TODAY? Let me help you get the ball rolling!
When I decided to start blogging, I had many reasons. My passion for home decor and remodeling on a budget gave me the push I needed. I also started blogging to help my family financially. I am still not where I want to be, but grow and learn daily.
The very first thing I did when I decided to blog was to decide on a blog name. I came up with a few options and made sure those names were available. Then, I searched on social media (instagram, facebook, etc) to make sure the name was available there as well. I wanted to choose a name that “fit” what I knew I wanted to blog about. My blog is a little bit of home decor, DIY, painting and a little lifestyle as well. After you have the name let’s get started on the technical stuff.
Choose your platform
There are a few options out there. WordPress, Blogger, Square Space. I started on the free WordPress because I wasn’t sure I was cut out to be a blogger. Let me save you some time and headaches. Start on a self hosted WordPress site. I say this for many reasons. They have better plugins that make customizing your site so simple. There are many bloggers who started elsewhere and like me, wish they would have just started on WordPress.
Decide on a Host

I know if you’ve never blogged before, this word may sound foreign to you. It did to me as well. So basically, a host is a company that “houses” your blog. There is a free wordpress available (no hosting needed) and that’s how I started (wordpress.com). But brands and companies prefer to work with bloggers that have a paid hosted site (WordPress.org). There is a monthly fee for any host you choose to house your blog and many hosting companies available.
I had limited funds when I first started out and I chose Bluehost for many reasons. It was recommended by many bloggers and is also recommended by WordPress. In full disclosure I eventually switched as my blog grew, but for those just starting out, this is a great place to start. They have 24/7 customer support and you get a free domain and email. So lets break down how to start your account and blog with Bluehost:
Start a Blog in Few Simple Steps
First, Sign up on the main page
Pick your plan
I’ve never seen these be more than a few bucks a month.
Decide on Your Domain
After you’ve finished signing up, Bluehost will allow you to then log into your account dashboard. From there, there is an option call a “C-Panel”. This is where all your hosting options from Bluehost are available. You will log into your C-Panel and select the website tab. From there, it will allow you to install your WordPress site! It’s that simple. I know this seems like a lot of steps, but I actually was on the phone with tech support when I completed this process to make it much easier.
I hope this helps you start a blog of your own. If you’d like a little background on me you can read all about that [HERE]. Blogging can be overwhelming at first. There is a ton of information available by reading others blog, searching on Pinterest and I even learned by watching some Youtube tutorials. Don’t ever let your fear stop you, or allow anyone to tell you it can’t be done. I am here to tell you that with a little hard work, you can and WILL make your blog a success.
Thanks so much for stopping by the blog today. It means the world to me!
