Whether you’ve lived in your home for a while, or just now moving in, the fastest way to feel at home is to personalize your space. Making your house a home doesn’t have to be expensive or generic. I’m going to share with you all the ways I personalize my homes while saving where I can. I will share some of my favorite places to shop and what I tend to look for!
Huge thank you to Cortland for sponsoring this post.
In my 37 years of life I have moved a lot. I have lived in apartments, condos, townhomes and houses. The one thing that stayed the same with each move is that I loved making my house a home. It’s amazing how quickly you can transform a space.
Apartment living was when I first discovered my love of decorating. Sometimes picking the perfect apartment is the best first step to take in making your space your haven. Cortland has more than 20 communities all over the DFW that not only offer beautifully designed apartments, they also come with thoughtfully designed living spaces like pools, living spaces and club houses! One of my favorite things about their properties, is their 48-hour service-completion guarantee. This means if the service issue isn’t resolved in 48 hours, you live there rent free until it is.
After you’ve scored the perfect apartment, it’s time to start decorating. The first step I tell people is find pictures of designed spaces you love and save them in a folder. After around 20 pictures, you will start to get an idea of what look you love. For me, it’s a mixture of “found” and primitive with a bit of french decor thrown in. There’s not always a “name” for certain styles and I love when there’s a uniqueness to spaces.
I tend to budget most projects and decor but there are a few areas where I do like to splurge when making your house a home. One of those is my bedding. We spend over half our lives in bed, pretty much, so why not make that space as cozy and comfortable as possible. Having a good mattress and comfortable bedding can make a huge difference in your sleep.
Rugs are another item where I tend to spend more money. They make such a statement and need to last a long time. Living on a farm means it also needs to be cleanable. Speaking of cleanable, having the best cotton towels money can buy is totally worth it for me. I feel like I am in a spa when I take a shower and can dry off with something as cozy as a blanket.
I love shopping at Estate Sales, Garage Sales and Antique malls to save on decor and still be able to find those unique or one of a kind items. Buy/sell pages are another great place to find those perfect items you’re looking for. A few of my other favorite stores include TJ Maxx, HomeGoods, Marshalls, Ikea and Ross. They have amazing throw pillows, throws and even faux plants if you’re like me and have a black thumb.
Speaking of Ikea, they have such a huge range of furniture and decor ideal for that perfect middle grown. You can find pieces that are affordable but look impressive in regards to design. Their Ektorp sofas are slipcovered and you can easily change your design colors without having to replace your whole sofa! It’s a quick design fix and a money saver. I did spend a little more than I normally do recently on a sofa for my downstairs living room. We needed deeper seats but also wanted slipcovers and I found that here!
I tend to make my furniture pieces pretty neutral and add my color and design with easily replaced items like lamps, throws, rugs and throw pillows! Just by making these few changes you can take a room from ocean cottage to farmhouse style.
For me, one of the quickest ways to add softness to a room is fresh flowers. They are so inexpensive but immediately brighten up any room. Curtains can give the same appeal. Again, I tend to use neutral curtains like the plain white ones found at Ikea. They go with literally every design style and are super reasonable.
I hope that you have found some inspiration and ideas to help make your house your home no matter where you live. There are no rules when it comes to design. But it does help to love where you live and I know that Cortland has the perfect place for you.
